Rear Sway Bars

So I am new to Tundra's and not a real experienced off-road accessory guy. The rear sway bar as I understand it is designed to enhance the handling of the Tundra by decreasing the roll. A second bonus of the sway bar is that it apparently may reduce the 'bed bounce' problem significantly. TRD offers a rear sway bar at a pretty good price (I think?) but before I get it I want to know if it will decrease my trucks off-road capability?? What's the deal?

To answer your offroad part of the question, no it will not decrease the offroad capabilities of your truck. As a matter of fact it actually helps, just as it does with on road sway control it helps do the same thing offroad, and also helps with wheel hop. My 2008 Tundra doesn't have the sway bar and it is pretty stable. However my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has front and rear sway bars and it helps a lot offroad and also helps in cornering on the highway, as I can take corners faster with the Sway bar than another jeep of the same model and year without the sway bars.

thanks!

thanks for the response. as for the 'bed-bounce' issue does anyone know anything about it? apparently at fifty five to sixty miles an hour on the freeway there is a vibration in the bed due to the stiff frame of the truck.

I've heard it does nothing for the bed bounce issue. Also, my understanding is that it is detrimental to offroading ability as it decreases the travel in the rear... presumably this is why many offroad vehicles have detachable sway bars.

The electric-disconnecting swaybars that are on Jeeps and Dodge PowerWagons are on the front. Disconnection does allow for increased articulation. Most rear swaybars don't disconnect. If you need a lot of travel, you'll need appropriate armor. There's not much available yet, especially for regular cab shortbed.
