Toyota lays off 200 temp workers at Tundra plant

The full-size pickup truck woes continue to worsen, leaving even mighty Toyota little choice but to slow production of its Tundra model. In fact, Toyota's brand new plant in San Antonio that was built just for the Tundra will be shutting down a total of 14 days between now and October. Full-time workers at the plant will be able to use vacation days, take the time off unpaid or find something else at the plant to do while the assembly line is halted.

Unfortunately, temp-to-hire workers aren't so lucky. Two-hundred employees who were hoping to land full-time positions at the plant will be laid off this summer. Toyota spokesman Mike Goss says, "We have a very long-term view of that factory in Texas. We're trying not to overreact. We're trying not to shut it down." Whoa... back up. Shut it down? We hadn't heard any such thing until it was spoken by Goss. Sounds like things are just as bad for Toyotas with beds as they are for pickups from Detroit.

They won't go down.....You remember our great govt. bailed out Dodge/Chrysler....Well look out Ford/GM... You have that along with the banks that are losing a great deal from the housing woes... Either one I personally don't want my tax dollars bailing them out. I don't get a free truck or my house paid for...

Toyota will stop making the 08 Tundra run on Aug. 8 and will stop making all Tundras and Sequoia's as of Aug. 8 till the end of Nov. in both plants in Indiana and Texas. ( Sequoia only in Indiana I know )Then they will start up again slow, depends on orders. Then the Tundra is going to be made only in Texas in the fall of 09 and the Highlander is going to be built in fall of 09 at the Indiana plant and its current home , Japan..

The only thing helping out toyota is that these plants are not union. Not knocking unions but being non-union means more profit for toyota. Unlike the big three who are union and are moving plants overseas and to Canada and Mexico!!! I truly think the Unions are bleeding the american companys dry, and thats why most manufacturing companys are falling and moving to cheaper labor countries!!! Lets be like Florida and be the right to work state. Maybe I'm wrong , but why else are the American companies moving out of the country and the foreign comanies moving in. As far as I understand it, The guys on the Toyota assembly lines are making good money and are non union!!!
