Corporations like Nike or GM,that moved to Korea and Mexico, do it for a couple reasons.
The foriegn countries build the factories for them free of charge, and they can exploit local workers with ridculously low wages. The taxes here drive the Corps. away as well as our wages. I dont believe Mexicans are doing jobs that Americans wont do, I believe Mexicans are doing jobs for WAGES american wont work for. Think about it. Our cheapest wages = great pay to most foriegn countries. America either send work over seas, or uses foriegn work forces here in the US to get work done cheaper. Its a dangerous situation for the US citizen

Not only dangerous but scary. Scary to think about 10 years from now and where we are all going to be. I feel sorry for my kids. Whats there life gonna be like in 10 or 20 years from now. Hopefully we bounce back here in the states.

I think Toyota is probably taking a step back to analyze the whole situation with the workers. Not to blame American workers, but it appears that ever since they started building here in the U.S. they've had quality issues. Maybe the time off they'll use to bleed out the workers that are cutting the corners therefore bringing a product that’s up to their standards, and not a vehicle that will fall apart 5yrs from now, or worst burn down for no apparent reason while being parked on the curb.

Good point, I recently went to the honda dealership with my sister, ( she really likes the accord. So I went to see that she got a fair price. They had 2 accords on the showroom floor that she liked and one was a little different so we asked the sales rep what the differencr was and see said the one was made in Japan. Myself and the salesrep agreed that the one made in Japan was probably the better choice. Not knocking American workers but common sense stepped in . History has shown that the japs have made a better vehicle than the Americans have.Sad but oh so true !!

always sucks to hear people are losing jobs, and getting temporarily laid off. i work for Bobcat, they make skid steer loads, mini excavators, ect.... im sure most of you have seen them. there are rumors going around that the fab/weld/assembly employees will possibly be looking at some time off as well. so it isnt just the vehicle industry that is down. even the construction industry is down. i dont think fuel price is the only thing to point the finger at, but it is definitely on the list.

Was in a union back in 77-82 . It was the local 13,000 Us Steel Workers union. I worked in an Aluminum plant. Back in 82 I was getting $12 an hour and we were approached then to drop $2 of pay so the company can afford to run there. Only 3 of us raised our hands for the pay cut. Yes I was outcasted by that. My statement to the president of the union was simple and plain. "I rather get paid $10 than $0". The plant threatened to shut down. My bills weren't high so I could live off $10 an hour. We avg a 44 hour week with one week being 52 hours and one week being 40. I also told that president if the plant shuts down you still get paid weekly by the union? He answered yes. So it doesn't matter to you if the plant shutsdown you still get paid. Well people 2 months later plant shut down laying off 2,000 people at the same time other places were laying off also. Needless to say that's why I went into the Navy for benefits for the family. Unions did get us great benefits in medical coverage but like mentioned above brought down alot of companies in the process.
