Toyota Tundra hit with two more quality issues

by John Neff

Last Tuesday the Toyota Tundra was kicked off the Consumer Reports "Recommended" list for achieving below average predicted reliability scores from its own owners. It appears, however, that the Tundra's week is about to get worse. With the help of Mike Levine from Pickuptruck.com, we're following two separate stories about Tundra quality issues that have surfaced recently. The first involves the Tundra's transmission, with at least ten owners at TundraSolutions.com reporting that their trannies experience rough shifts that make the truck feel like it's riding over rumble strips. The 'rumble strip' transmission issue has been acknowledged by Toyota North America and traced back to the torque converter not disengaging properly. Owners report having their transmissions replaced with new or remanufactured ones, though Toyota told Levine that going forward the automaker would only replace the torque converter itself. Toyota did not say, however, how many trucks are affected, just that the transmission problem is not a safety or design issue.

The second quality issue sprouted up this past weekend, also on TundraSolutions.com, and involves tailgates that have been failing or, in some cases, even falling off. The most common experience seems to be the tailgate itself forming cracks and the metal buckling when under load. One owner reported that his tailgate failed when loading an ATV into the bed for the very first time. The tailgate being such an integral part of owning a truck, members of TS have begun an online petition, which they hope will force Toyota to recognize the issue and do something about it. The petition has attracted 125 signatures so far. Levine from Pickuptruck.com has also asked Toyota about these potentially failing tailgates and is waiting for a response.

Yes, the Toyota Tundra has had a very rough week, but it's no more difficult than the time Tundra owners spend with trucks that don't work as advertised.

I had that "rumble strip" vibration occur to me a couple of times also! Had no idead what it was. Lasted about 2-3 seconds and then it was gone. looked back on the road to see if i hit a bad patch of asphalt or something, nothing there... Was wondering what could cause that vibration. I have a 07 Crewmax 5.7 made in 06/07. Help please, more info...

Get to your dealer. I heard this was the tranny issue but sounded like they have it down to the torque converter. They're replacing them.

Toyota Responds to Cracked Tailgates Appearing On Some Tundras

As many of our readers are aware, over the weekend a group of Toyota Tundra owners at TundraSolutions.com (TS) posted information and pictures showing cracks appearing in the tailgates of some new Tundra pickups.

Owner accounts in the TS discussion thread recall similar usage scenarios before the metal separation was noticed. Paint and metal cracking appeared after loading heavy objects into the backs of the trucks, using the tailgates to balance and assist in cargo ingress and placement. Some of the pictures show extreme deformation of the tailgate sheetmetal.

In a conversation with PickupTruck.com, a Toyota spokesperson says Toyota is aware of the tailgate cracking. Owners experiencing this issue should bring their truck to a Toyota dealer, where the tailgate will be fixed or replaced under warranty, at no charge to the owner. Any collateral damage to the truck's box or other components immediately adjacent to the tailgate, directly attributable to the cracking issue, will also be covered under warranty.

There are two lessons to be learned from this.

First, the power of truck owners to self-organize and quickly exchange rich information about a seemingly unique but actually widespread issue just made a giant advance forward. I can't recall any problem ever gaining momentum this quickly before that started with owners announcing the problem first and not a major news outlet or blog. I'm willing to bet that Toyota isn't the only OEM that noticed this either.

Second, Toyota is quickly acknowledging and acting on this issue, and other recent quality problems with the Tundra. That's exactly what they need to be doing. Hopefully this will be the last big glitch or it's going to be very challenging, in my opinion, to hit their critical 200,000 units in annual sales volume. At the end of the day it's reliability that sells trucks.

I wonder if Toyota would cover the cost of re-applying my Line-X bedliner if the tailgate failed.

Does anyone know if this tranny problem is common to both the 4.7 and the 5.7L engines? I just bought an '07 Dbl Cab with the 4.7 about 2 weeks ago, and just started hearing about the torque converter & tailgate issues. Now i'm paranoid. I thought I'd heard that most of the problems were on the 5.7L engine. Anybody know for sure?

Hate to say it, but my brand new 08 CM 4x4 is doing the "rumble strip" shifts especially in 2nd to 3rd gears, last very shortly but makes the car vibrate as if you are going over tractor tracks like the kind they put on the side of highways to let you know that you've veered off the road. Its going to the dealer next week.

This ticks me off....I was driving home from work today and experienced the "rumble strip" shifting in my transmission (2nd to 3rd). Goin in to the dealership this weekend...hope I don't have any issues getting it fixed. This is the first time its happened and I have around 2000 miles on the truck.
