Toyota Tundra buyers 'need' incentives

There's an interesting article over at AutoObserver regarding Tundra buyers. Toyota has found that 36% of their Tundra customers are upside down (owe more than the vehicle is worth) with their current vehicles, and without large incentives, there will be no sale.

Other interesting facts:
• About one-half of all Tundra buyers trade in something.
• Some 40 percent of those trade-ins are Toyota products.
• Another 40 percent of trade-ins are “conquests” from domestic manufacturers – and half of those conquest trade-ins are fullsize pickups.
• About 10 percent of all Tundra sales come from buyers trading a domestic pickup.
Straightline - Toyota Tundra buyers 'need' incentives

Interesting facts - I wonder how many people/transactions this survey included.

Where do the Tundra owners on this Forum fall into place at. I happen to actually fall in the 10% of all Tundra sales coming from trading in my 2005 Silverado. However I am not new to Toyota, this is actually my 4th Toyota purchase. My wife currently drives a 2003 Sequoia with 110,000 miles on it and besides general mant. I have not had any problems. My Silverado was getting close to going out of warranty so I had to get rid of it due to too many warranty issues. By the way, I am not upside down in my new Tundra Crewmax. The $3,500.00 rebate was a big factor in my decision to trade vehicles at this time.

I got $2500 rebate incentive. I also traded in my 2001 Isuzu Trooper that was paid off ($5k). I also paid $100 over invoice on my Tundra. But, I don't know how much my Tundra is worth. Kelley Blue Book doesn't have enough info to give a value. That is what should be used to determine upside-down (owing more than your truck is worth).

I didn't trade anything in when I bought mine, but I did use the 0% financing for about half the purchase price. I'd rather keep the cash in the bank earning interest, but didn't want to finance all of it and have to deal with a big payment.

We did trade our Lexus RX330 on our FJ Cruiser...almost an even trade.

here at our store we see about a 65% trade ratio to 35% no trade sales. GM trucks have been and continue to be what we take in trade most after Toyota products.

without incentives, dealing in the world of full size truck sales would be impossible! It is a staple in the marketing strategy of ALL the major manufacturers and until such time that ALL manufacturers STOP doing it ALL of them will continue. It leads one to believe that the MSRP is set to include the marketing strategy of the day!

I paid $300 under invoice, got the $2500 rebate, and didn't pay tax for my SR5 Double Cab. This is my third Toyota Truck, I did not have a trade and i've never bought an american vehicle and never plan on it.
