Yes, the Tundra ads are real!

Q: Are those Toyota Tundra ads —with the truck out over a cliff or on a giant seesaw —real or out of a computer?

A: They are the real thing — not CGI (computer generated imagery). Look closely, and you can read "actual demonstration" on the screen. Toyota and its agency, Saatchi & Saatchi, L.A., have sworn affidavits attesting to the authenticity of the stunts in the ads.

VIDEO:
Tundra lifts heavy payload up a cliff

One of the first two ads in the series, which first appeared during the Super Bowl, showed the pickup accelerating to get through a gap in a wall before huge doors blocked the opening. Another showed the truck teetering on a giant seesaw — towing 10,000 pounds up one side and braking to hold it back as the seesaw tips down on the other side. Stunt driver Chuck Picerni Jr. drove the truck in both.

"It had to be real, or we couldn't say 'actual demonstration,' " says Damian Stevens, Saatchi's director of integrated production. "Without doing it for real, it's a cheat."

In a new ad that began airing last week, a Tundra pickup with stunt driver Matt McBride at the wheel pulls a shipping container with "6,400 pounds of dead weight" up over the edge of a cliff. Compared with that feat, the announcer says, "towing 10,100 pounds is a walk in the park." Toyota and its agency hired a company that contracts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create scale models before building the sets. The huge seesaw, erected and filmed in Lone Pine, Calif., was visible from four miles away

Talking

I have a coworker on a Mountain Rescue Team and saw them building the device north of Ridgecrest, Ca off hwy 395.... I think it was near "Lone Pine".

I may take a drive up and see if any of it is left.

They do a bunch of the car ads up in Ridgecrest area. The airport in Inyokern is in SEVERAL car ads that are running right now. Like the one where they drop the lexis and the one where they are demoing the 8 speed automatic tranny.

Pulling trailer up the cliff

Does anyone know where I can download the new commercial where the Tundra D-Cab 4X4 pulled up the metal cargo trailer up the cliff? I do not have DVR on my TV yet. I like that commercial a lot.
