Toyota Tundra rolls over three competitors
![]() Toyota and General Motors, which redesigned their trucks for 2007, beat the Dodge Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. Those trucks have had only some minor tweaks since their last redesign. Officials at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, which builds the Tundra, were proud of the honor. The truck tested by Consumer Reports, however, was built in Toyota's other Tundra facility in Princeton, Ind. "We are pleased the Tundra received this recognition from Consumer Reports," Vice President Luis de la Garza said in a statement. "It's a nice reflection of our team members' and suppliers' dedication to quality and hard work." The review touted the Tundra's power and acceleration as well as some of the cabin appointments. The truck was criticized for its ride and the distance from the driver to some of the controls. "The Tundra's powertrain was just beautiful," said Gabriel Shenhar, program leader for Consumer Reports. "The acceleration was extremely fast. The six-speed automatic was wonderful. Response was smooth. There were some nice details such as interior storage for files and a telescoping steering wheel and damped tailgate." He said the Silverado model Consumer Reports tested had a smoother ride than the SR5 version of the Tundra, and its rear seat was better than the Tundra's. The four models each were given a battery of 50 similar tests, which included acceleration, braking, access and cargo. Each model had a similar trim package, and each model was a crew cab, meaning it had a rear seat, though not a full-size rear seat. Each truck also had the largest V-8 engine available. CD918, Not true. CD did not stack the deck. They tested the most commonly purchased version of the Tundra against the most commonly purchased version of the Silverado. If Chevy wants to compete they need to put the 6.0 standard in all of thier crew cab models as Toyota puts the 5.7 standard in the Crewmax. Until then, the 6.0 is a rarely purchased option and not fit to be compared with the 5.7. Instead of beating up on CD, I commend them for having some courage to test the vehicles that most consumers will buy rather than cherry picking the top options that less than 10% of consumers purchase and allowing the manufacturers (such as GM) to "cheat" the system.

Hey believe what you want but a "COMPARISION" should be of largely similar Trucks. - IMHO The 6.0 vs. the 5.7 would have been a lot better test - IMHO...and I think the Tundra would STILL win. ![]() |

Popular Mechanics Magazine tested the five 1/2 ton trucks in March 2007 consisting of Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge. In this comparison, they did use GM's 6.0 liter Vortec Max against the others and the Tundra still beat it (although Nissan took first overall). As the comparison shows, GM's 4-speed tranny is the weak link in their drive train compared to Nissan's 5-speed and Toyota's 6-speed trannys. You can read about the tests and results here: Top 5 New Pickup Trucks: Comparison Test - Popular Mechanics

Chevy could have used the 6.0L engine and still lost due to Chevy vehicles don't have any power. Although the old chevy straight 6 engines had power Chevy has screwed up once again and are trying to use cheap V8 engines. The 5.4L Triton V8 in the Fords is a somewhat good engine, although Fords are notorious for starting to leak oil afer a few thousand miles. Dodge trucks just have a lot of transmission issues it seems like.

I read a test from Edmunds on the Chev with the 6.0litre, Tundra Double Cab Limited with the 5.7, and the Titan with the 5.6. Tundra was tops over the three overall. They liked the ride and finish of the Chev better. Nissan was last (I believe). I've also seen power curves for the three engines in question .. the chev 6.0litre is basically flat up until about 1000rpm before redline where it jumps in power from about 220 up to the threehundred and whatever HP is present at the rear. .. the Titan's curve looked more like a torque curve but was nicely shaped for all that, it developed max power at a fairly useable RPM. Toyota's 5.7 started off just below the Titan but built steadily in an almost linear relation with RPM to its peak HP. From the curves presented .. the chev would be labouring while towing anything big at low RPM's compared to the Titan and the Tundra. I have a crewmax limited right now (haven't actually gotten into it yet, I'm working away) and I drive a 2007 silverado at work. I do really like the ride and interior of the chev. It's very nice, but I'm sure I'll love my crewmax too ... especially when I get on the gaspedal

I tend to agree with homedawg. When I bought mine in July they only had 5.7 in all crewmax on the lot. The ext cabs had the 4.6 or 5.7. As for the rear seat and ext cab seat would be small and not enough room as for my Crewcab I'm 6ft and my son-in-law 6'6'' can sit behind me and ride comfortable with leg room.

This is great a website designed for all the guys who love Ford's but can't afford them. I spend more time signing up for this than its worth. Hey guys there this thing called girls. They are pretty cool and fun, you should meet them some time. Tundra's are nice toying but if your looking for a real truck find one thats been doing this for a while with a proven record. Maybe one that makes a commercial truck. Just a idea, also dont forget about thinking about talking to a girl. Thay dont have cooties, Buy a real truck and get a life. Oh yhea in 2007 the drive shaft where falling out of them its a national recall check it out, how about the cam shafts. Thats a great truck, keep up the great work.
