I learned to shoot around 5 or 6 years old with a single shot .22. I kept it under my bed along with the ammo and had access to it 24/7.
I now have a .22 semi-auto, a .223/5.56 AR, a 30-30, a .270, a 12 ga., and a .40. I've pulled a weapon on 2, maybe 3 people, only when I was working as armed security, and defending myself.
I've never used any of them irresponsibly except for once shooting a fish (didn't have my fishing rod with me, but was out hunting rabbits at the time.)
I firearms instructor I once knew said once his kids were 6 or 7 he started letting them shoot and teaching them how to handle various things to the point where they were bored with it and there was no novelty or excitement in it for them. They could handle or go shooting any time they wanted, the only rule was they were absolutely not to touch anything until he was around to supervise.
He never had a problem.
That is exactly how I grew up and how I raised my children.
Last night I showed my son up pretty bad with my groupings vs his with the new 1911. Little prick went and got his bow and challenged me to a rematch.

My dad was a professional coonhunter. He was on a VA pension and we hunted for hides for extra money. If a coon got stuck in the tree after it was shot, He sent my six year old ass up the tree to get it.
I remember one time I fell and landed on my back on roots that were above ground. I think I broke my back. He gave me a half a darvon and told me not to tell my mom.

I was with him when he picked up a brand new 1962 Ford pickup.
I was standing in the seat beside him when he had to hit the brakes and I went into the dash. Lost control of my bottle of coke and it went into the dash speaker and ruined it. I wound up with stitches in my head.
