Which GPS unit?

Starting to look at the different portable units since We got 3 cars. Don't need or want a bunch of features, so I can get a cheap one. The Tom Tom One got a "best buy" rating as did the Garmins Nuvi 260 & 350.

Any feedback from you guys that have one?

Also, my boat website is down, so I ask, will these work in a boat too? I doubt that the water maps are loaded in these, but I just boat in inland like around Oh, Ky and Tn. Whaddya think? Will this help my ass on Lake Cumberland, lost and in the dark, or do I use my Lewis & Clark dead reckoning skills?

Looks like you read Consumer Reports also. I have a friend with a Garmin, not sure which one, and he likes it. Easy to use.

the nuvi series is extremely compact and easy to carry. I have the street pilot C580 and I recently bought a nuvi 350 for my mom, got good specials on both. Both are awsome.

Buy a map, they're a lot cheaper, and more accurate. I've used maps for years and haven't got lost yet. Tried a GPS navigation system once, and it sent me 80 miles out of my way. They're useless, unreliable, over-rated, and expensive.

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 360 and love it. I've taken it with me on business trips out of State as well as all over Utah and it hasn't let me down yet. Super easy, user friendly setup and use. The price has been cut in half on these units in the last 6 months. They used to sell for about $700.

Whatever you buy make sure it has text-to-speech!

I have a Tom Tom 720 and I like it. The price on this particular model is coming down. Saw it recently at Sam's Club for $299.00. I paid $350 two months ago. Have used it several times and it works great. Great reception, accurate maps, easy to use.

We have several Garmin units (2610, 60CSX, and 376C). The 2610 is a discontinued unit with a lot of great features and can be found for ~$160. We've replaced them with the 376C units, but keep the 2610's around just for backups and loaners. We mainly got the 376c units for the NEXRAD radar and traffic functions since we use them on our bikes for IronButt comps and vacation touring. The 60CSX is our main hiking/kayaking unit, but also works well in the car.

I've looked at the other brands (TomTom, Magellan, etc) but I always come back to Garmin. I like the interfaces and the software mapping better...or maybe I'm just used to them. Either way, I think it would be hard to go wrong with a Garmin.

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone ever use one of the Garmins in a boat? What does the screen look like, since there's no streets or roads? After reading some reviews, I'm leaning towards one of the Garmins below $300~350.
Wildbill- Map? I don't need no stinkin' map, I'm a man! I just need to buy some electronic gizmo to stimulate the economy.

On some of the Garmin models they have an off road setting that will give you the general layout of your surroundings .

Same for the marine models. My buddy has one on his sport fishing boat. Very nice, accurate, detailed color display.

We use the Garmin 376C on our 22' Baymaster down on the Gulf. The screen looks like a standard nautical chart, but with colors and live position updates...plus all the standard GPS data, of course.
