Home Protection Recomendations (2nd amendment type)

So with recent activities around these parts, I've started thinking it would probably be a good idea to get some sort of firepower. My question to you pros is what would you recommend for someone like me. I've fired guns in the past but just messing around in the desert, shooting bottles and stuff like that. I don't need anything nickel plated and was looking for something like what the police or swat teams use. I heard Sig Sauer is a good, reliable brand.

mossberg 500, loaded with 5 rounds of 00 buck shot. It's exactly what swat teams and police use. Don't bother with a hand gun or long rifle. with a 12guage you simply pick a room. Also everyone knows that EXTREMELY unique sound of a shot gun having a shell racked into the breech.

end.of.thread.

haha, that was my first thought then I started thinking of the mess something like that would make. Anyone know if pistol grip shotguns are illegal in CA?

What everyone wrote above is true. As a 5.0 myself, I would recommend something easy to use, safe and cost efficient. Glock, Sig and Kimber are all great guns but pricey. Check into Taurus. They make several nice pistols in the revolver and semi-auto. I have the Millenium Pro .45 and it is great. I bought it to keep in my truck mostly because it has an external thumb safety and is compact. The Glock, which I carry at work, does not have an external thumb safety. The safety is built into the trigger so one will need to be VERY careful when handling. Taurus also makes a revolver called "The Judge". Sweet gun which fires a .44 and 4-10 shotgun round. It is the ulitimate in home protection. Pepper them with the shotgun round and no need to worry much about aim since a shotgun round (birdshot) pepper's out like a dust ball. You can have the .44 waiting to fire next in line. Mitch is right, the sound of a pumping shotgun can get a dirtbag out of a car real fast, or in your case running out of your home. Ramoine is correct too, all those guns he mentioned are great, but a little expensive. Ruger also makes some decent handguns which are affordable. You will also need to decide on the caliber. A .45 is great but expensive to shoot and hard to handle for a novice. You can do much damage with a small caliber such as .380 or .38 special. I own about every caliber and brand, all have their goods and bads. Get something that feels comftorable in your hand. Give Tarus a look on their website. You can get a really good handgun for well under $500. Some will reply that Taurus' are junk, but they are much improved in the last 7-8 years. I love my .45 Pro but do carry the Glock at work because it is provided free of cost and I would probably carry a Glock anyway if I had to choose. They are designed for Police style.....point and squeeze....no outer safeties to mess with. But, for home protection, you need to have something safe. Something you can feel comftorable with. Sig's are excellent too, I dont know what the cost factor is.

Wow, thanks for all the info. I'm leaning towards a handgun because I want something I can keep near my bed, hidden. Ideally I would want 2-3 handguns located in different areas of the house just in case someone breaks in and I'm not in my bedroom. Also probably something I can teach the wife how to shoot. I'll just have to remember not to piss her off.

I personally keep a S&W .38 w/ Plus P rounds close to my bed... Revolver won't jam when you need it most. Plus two speed loaders...

I personally like the Remington 870 12 Gauge w/ 18" barrel extended mag. w/ 00 buck shot. You can be sure that MFing burglar will be leaving in a body bag.

I like guns and have them , but dogs are safer to have around and almost any dog will alert you to what's going on around your home .

No, I hate cats. I love dogs but guns are easier to maintain. You are correct dogs wil alert you to what is going on around your home.
