Syber , have you taken had any kind of handgun trainning ? Many local police as well as sheriffs depts. offer classes as well as local gunshops have self defense classes for firearms trainning .
I've been to some and then you get experience and trainning from a proffesional instructor .

You can also rent handguns at most ranges , and that might help you narrow down what fits you the best .

Just my opinion .

Yes , they are easier to maintain , but most dogs don't kill . Keeping a firearm is a much bigger responsability .
I have children and having guns secured at all times is a rule to follow .
I have had a CCL for almost 20 yrs. , and I can tell you that if it;s not on my person it's locked up in a quick safe .

Your right, guns must be locked up. You could look at criminal charges if a child gets ahold of it. Should be common sense but unfortunately it is not.

I have an Indian Ringneck (small green parrot) outside in a cage close to my front door.

This bird will frickin' go off chirping and screaming if a stranger comes to my front yard. If he knows the person he is fine... unreal.

A real life "watch parrot"!

My dad just gave me his Winchester 1300 12ga. I have it loaded buck, bird, buck, bird, buck. I plan on really F****** the poor fool that tries to invade my space. I also bought a Sig P229 about a year ago and I love it. The only thing when teaching your wife to shoot is, she will be more accurate shooting one handed until she can get over the anticipation of pulling the trigger. It sounds crazy but it's true.

GLOCK'S are a good choice.... drag'm thru the mud pick it up and start shooting it.... my brother in law does his research over and over to make a good informative decision on his gun choices... but yes the best thing to do is go to a range and test fire several wepons and get what feels good for you... not just what we all recomend to get... good luck with your purchase..

Something to think about, a shot gun is MUCH less likely to go threw a wall, kill your wife then go threw another wall and kill your neighbor.

If you're not going to hit the range fairly often with a hand gun, DO NOT GET ONE. handguns are not idiot proof, shotguns are damn near as dumbed down as you can get. Point and shoot, you point at it and fire, it's dead.
