Man, I would love to go. I have a .270 rifle. Is that big enough to kill a moose. I have my hunting license in Texas. Not sure if that would work in Montana. How far of a drive is it from Houston. I'll mapquest it now.

Will do. If we make a plan. I'm in. Are you a hunter? If you are, and I shoot a moose up there I'll let you field dress it for me. Hehe

A .270 will kill a moose but a bigger caliber would be better. I will let you use my .300 win short magnum. HOWEVER...you will need an out of state license and you will need to put in for a moose permit. Moose permits aren't that easy to obtain. I have been putting in for years and not gotten one. You would be more likely to get an Elk or deer permit.

I'll take my 7 mag and my Mathews Bow. If you kill something, I will help you field dress it, but you are doing most of the work. Field dressing anything bigger than a deer is a lot of work.

Forget the moose, I'll shoot an elk or big ass deer. Thanks for the help with the field dress. I should probably learn how to do it myself. Do you have an out of state hunting license? I'm going to look into getting one.

Field dressing deer is a piece of cake!! I can gut a deer before it hits the ground
Elk are easy as well but much bigger so it's nice to have 2 guys for those, especially a big bull but one guy can do it if he knows what he is doing. Moose are a little harder cuz their so damn big.I can teach you how to FD your animal.

Hey how do you secure the cabin from intruders? animals and humans? Do you use a heavy duty lock and bars on the windows? Just curious since it is so far out and away. I'm sure you don't have a lot of neighbors.

Considering it sounds like his cabin is roughly 1 1/2 hrs from a main road really My guess is that even in the summer there are not too many human folk around.
Up at my lake house many people don't even lock there doors at night and even in the day when they are going in to town or out on the water for the day. It is one of those type things where if someone takes all the trouble to get to your place then not even a 2 foot thick concrete wall is going to stop them from getting in.

I understand that, but my family has a similar cabin out in the woods that we use for hunting in the Minnesota north woods. It's about 30 miles from the main highway and about 15 miles of gravel roads. It sits out in some logging country and the nearest cabin is 3 miles away. But we still have bars on the windows and a big ass heavy duty door and lock with a metal cover to prevent prying.
I know that if someone wants in bad enough then thats what they will do. But having some security measures keeps most out if they were to try and come up with any ideas. There is always some idiots driving around and exploring, they stumble upon the cabin and, well you get the idea. |
