Tundra vs Titan

Hi all,

New guy on the block here. I currently have an 05 Titan that I am going to be getting rid of within the next 60 days. I've looked(and driven) the 08 Tundra and was fairly impressed at the hp and tq that it can lay down on paper. I was equally impressed with the 1/4 mile times(15.2 secs). My question is; are there any former Titan owners that endorse the Tundra over the Titan? I guess my biggest concern is that I'll have the 6" Procomp lift and wheel/tire upgrade added to the Tundra if I decide to buy it. I test drove a lifted Tundra CrewMax and it seemed a little sluggish when I mashed the pedal(maybe I'm just used to my modded, un-lifted, Titan). I understand that I'll be losing a certain amount of hp by having a lifted truck, but do the pro's out-weigh the cons? Also, is it worth the $$$ to add the TRD stuff to the Tundra. I'm all about performance, power and off-road capability, not too concerned about fuel mileage. Thx in advance,

Dave

I can definitely endorse the Tundra over the Titan, I have owned two Titan KC.LE 4X4's and only got 9600 miles out of the 04 and 22kmiles out of the 05.
It is known that the Titan has very weak front and rear diff, transfer case, front axle and rear axle seals. With a lift, these parts designed for a Jeep Wrangler and Frontier fail even faster.
While at first glance the Titan looks cheaper, but when you look at the features you get with the Tundra, the price difference disappears.
Only some titans get VSC and it is bundled with other options that make it expensive. Also, only some Titans get ABLS, which if you have it you can't turn it off. All Tundras come with VSC, TRAC and A-LSD, 4WD come with A-TRAC, plus you can turn these on or off as you please. The Titan's tow mode is joke, all it does is change the shift points in the first three gears. The Tundras tow mode changes the shift points when up shifting from 1-6 gear and when down shifting from 6th-5th, 5th-4th and 4th- 3rd gear. The Tundra's tow mode does other things which I won't go into now.
Another thing to consider is that the Titan may be canceled, sales dropped another 30% in Jan. to about 3600 Titans sold.Add that to the Titan's huge warranty claims and Nissan is bleeding $.
In less than 2 years, I had over $12k worth of parts replaced and that was the good Titan. The sad part was that the same parts continued to fail, so it didn't really do any good to replace them. One good thing is that you could mark on your calender when you expected the parts to fail again, Nissan was very good at building in a very limited life span to their parts.

Thanks for the input...here's another question;

Is the sound system in the Tundra as good as the one in the Titan, or are my ears deceiving me? I know that the Titan has Rockford-Fosgate and the Tundra has JBL, but I'm pretty sure that the Titan's sound system has more "thump" as far as bass is concerned. I didn't get a chance to really play with the stereo controls in the Tundra, and that's why I'm asking.

I've got the "upgraded" JBL system in my Limited, and whereas a lot of these younger guys are doing some mind blowing things with the audio systems in their trucks, my stock system suits me fine.

Of course I'm half-deaf from all the Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, Black Sabbath and AC/DC concerts I attended in my youth. So if you're under 30 you probably won't be satisfied with the JBL, and if you're over 30 you probably don't have enough hearing left to appreciate the subtleties.

I don't have the JBL in my Tundra but my wife's Camry has the JBL and it rocks...literally!!

The Titan with the RF system definitely has more "thump" than the JBL system. One of the reasons that you feel the thump more in the Titan is that the sub woofer is under the drivers seat rather than the rear seat as in the Tundra.
As far a clarity and distortion the JBL IMO is much more clear, especially at higher volume levels.
Since I rarely listen to music(I listen to talk radio), the quality of the stereo in either truck wasn't much of a factor for me in my buying decision.

Well that does it...

I'm sold. I'm going to pick-up the Tundra as soon as I get settled in the new house. I can't wait to see what she'll do in off-road conditions. Thx to all that left input.

Right there you lost all credibility.

Go ask the same question in a Titan message board (or Ford or GM or Dodge) and you will get a totally different answer.

BTY I have an 04 titan, only warranty work so far been the brake judder fix.

I hate to say it but I had alot better luck with my titan. brakes and diff were replaced thats it. I put 85k miles on it in two years. Plus I think it had alot more low end grunt, a way stiffer frame. The tundra has a nicer interior though, and a better on road ride.

I posted a rant previously: 'good riddance'... I was very upside-down on the 04 Titan but was so frustrated with all the shop time (and repeat shoptime) plus rattles, squeaks, leaks, ad nauseum...that I jumped at Toyota's no down/ no interest/5 yr deal. NO REGRETS! In fact that little voice in my head for the last several years was right..I shoulda bought a toyota...duh. OK, fine: the RF was infinitely better than the SR5 stuff, but it's the QUIET that I'm groovin' on. Quality has it's own sound. In 5 years I'll have a used, paid-for Toyota (double duh) 'nuff sed. additionally: the $12,000 figure for repairs that someone else mentioned didn't surprise me at all. Keep in mind that Renault controls Nissan..'nuff sed.

Don't forget Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, and Nazareth. No wonder I never hear my woofer behind my back seat. I have 2 blankets covering it up behind the seat. Maybe that's a good thing.

I maybe wrong but replacing a diff is a big deal. These things shouldn't go out.

The local 'Titan clan' all sang similar laments: leaky windshield, warped brake rotors, rearends blown after towing faster than 50 mph. 'should've started a 'warranty coffee clutch'... I'm gonna get off this thread. My back's up again.

I'm probably a little late to this, but here's my take: I had an '06 Titan and don't have a bad thing to say about it, I'd own another one in a heartbeat. It was a great truck for me, performed well and I never had one thing that went bad with it in the 2 years and 22K miles I owned it. I was forced to sell it when I did, otherwise I'd still own it. A few months later I was able to replace it and at the time looked at the Tundra. There were a few things I liked better about the Titan. There were several things I liked a lot better about the Tundra. It's a personal decision, they're both great trucks and have their pros and cons. This time around the Tundra was my choice. It's a little roomier, the sound system is just as good or better (yep, the sub woofer not being under the driver seat does make a difference but the clarity of the system is excellent and the blue tooth is awesome), the AC/Heater controls are easier to use, the glove boxes are nice and roomy, the seats are excellent, love the steering wheel, etc. Lots of personal preference stuff-go try it! I do miss some of the nifty little things that the Titan had, like the grocery hooks under the backside of the rear seats...small things like that were well thought out in the Titan.
