I've got a merkur and love it. He could also check a local antique store, I've picked a few from them for $5. Most need a cleaning with some simple green and a toothbrush. And to start off I would not get feathers, get a sample pack from westcoastshaving.com for a few dollars and see what works for you.
But then another strange phenomenon occurs and you want to try soaps and different creams, then the aftershaves, then the razors and brushes. Then you'll get ballsy and try a straightedge. It's a never ending cycle. I had to promise my wife and myself not to buy anything else until I work my way trough the surplus of creams and aftershaves I have now.
Ha, I have no interesting in trying a straightedge. I have tried a few different blades and like the feathers the best. Was just using that as an example of what you could buy, you could get cheaper and save more money if that is your thing.

I've got a straightedge and rarely use it. I just do not get a good shave with it, it pulls more than cuts. I may need to go get it honed again. I also love the feathers; super sharp but expensive. Sorry guys back on track, no pictures but I just got an ice cold Coke zero. Delicious
