New here! I have MPG questions!

Hey,

Yep I'm new hear and I have lots of questions. Firstly I can't find a search feature, to search for the 5 basic questions I am going to ask. So any help will be greatly appreciated.

About me:

I have a 1993 Toyota Pick-up, so basic it didn't even get a name. It's an extended cab, long box, base model with the 2.4L, standard 5 speed. This truck rocks, and only has a mere 340000 km, or 204000 miles on it. But it is getting older and not really the safest truck to be hauling around my two kids. My wife and I both drive a lot, mostly rural driving 80-100 kph or 50-60 mph. I really love the mileage I'm getting from my truck, 9-10 L/100km or 23-25 MPG.

Now I love my truck, and I need another, but I don't need a lot of power. I haul a lot of bulk but not very much weight. My truck will never tow a trailer that weighs more than 500lbs, and it wouldn't be further than 10 miles. That happens twice a year.

My problem, the base Tacoma with a 4cyl would be fine, but can't put two child seats in it. I need the four door model, with the 4.0L V6. I'd like to buy used. But these trucks are expensive. I don't mind that, 'cause you get what you pay for. Thats why I'm buying another Toyota.

A found lots of 2005 Tundras with the extended cab 2wd which is fine for me. These are cheaper than a comparable Tacoma, plus they have a longer box. According to all the posted gas mileage info, funny how $4.00/Gal makes everyone talk fuel economy now, the 4.0L V6 Tundra gets the same mileage as the 4.0L Tacoma, and better mileage than older Tundras and Tacomas with smaller engines.

After a 20 minute introduction, here is my real question.

Does the 4.0L Tundra really get the posted 20-22 MPG in real world highway driving?

If so then I will buy one on Saturday. I've read other MPG tales on this site and people were saying they were getting 25 MPG at 60 MPH. Thats amazing, and from what I could gather they were getting this with the V8's.

So could someone please answer these questions, or provide me with the link to the previous discussions as I am sure they have come up more than once.

Thanks in advance.

Ron

i hear people are getting best gas mileage with theyre 5.7L

the 4.0 struggles to lug a huge truck

and i think the same is a little true about the 4.7L

there are lots of threads regarding this .. and most people with all different size motors recommend the 5.7L

with decent highway driving, the 5.7L gets around 20mpg i believe

well I don't have the V6 but I am almost sure you can get 20 mpg on the highway taking it easy on the gas pedal. I would not expect anything above 21++ though.

Well in my opinion (nobody take it personal), get what you really need if you want to save as much $$$ as possible, most of the guys with the 5.7 will tell you to get the 5.7. That's what everyone told me when I asked about the mileage (just like you are doing right now). If you want a fast truck, most powerful engine etc, go with the 5.7, you can get a good deal right now. In general the 5.7 will get a a bit better mileage on the highway. Probably not in the city though.

Another option: I bet you could get a crazy low price in one of the smaller engines atm. When I went to get my truck I was considering all 3 engines. I noticed the price difference was very small between the V6 and the 4.7 V8, so just went with the small V8. The 5.7 on the other hand was a couple thousands dollars more. I was on a tight budget and I don't regret my decision. The 4.7 is mor ethan enough for me

The smaller engines are NOT BAD!!!!

wishing

I have an 08 double cab with the 5.7 and 2000 miles. I only wish I got mileage posted by other owners. My driving is mostly in town and I have not done the math by dividing miles by gas used. The digital gauge is saying 13.6 mph. I had a 01 F 150 Supercrew prior with the 5.4 with the same type driving got 15. I still love my Tundra. I believe the sticker only rates the Tundra at 13 and 17

I agree......My MPG is mostly around the 14's with a 5.7 CM. The max I got was 17 on a completely HWY driving 80-85 on the interstate. It would have been higher if I had drove slower.

I get alittle more because of the mods and holding the foot back. On long hauls doing 60 I'm getting 22.5mpg...This also goes with The Smith Driving System which I'm an instructor of for my company I work for. Mainly you will have to change your driving habits with being on flat land Florida helps out with fuel economy...

I actually got 18.5 yesterday...was very happy. It was a 45 minute drive, some city, but mostly hwy. I usually drive it at 75/80 and I tried 65 this time and it made a huge difference. I think It would have been even higher if I did 65 longer on the hwy. It was the city part that brought it down.

I don't know how you guys are getting the high mpg. I get 14 to 15 on the hiway, maybe thats because i live in the foothills of alberta, not to many flat streches and when im working i get 10 to 12 mpg, alot of dirt roads, stoping and going, oh ya and lots of mud.

I've never gotten close to 18.5 either. I think on a slight downhill grade with a tailwind I might get 17.5.
