K&N air filter

Have new 2008 tundra with 5.7 engine. Have installed K & N air filter and my gas mileage has dropped 1.5-2MPG around town. All previous use of K&N filters on other vehicles have had opposite results. What is the purpose of the charcoal filter in lid of air filter box. Would removal allow better air flow and mileage with the K & N? Any advice or first hand experience with this problem would be appreciated. tks dan

Dan I use AFE instead of an K&N. My truck actually went up from 1.5 to 2mpg. Try computing your mileage instead of the truck's computer doing it. See if there is a difference. I'm not sure why it went down.

Take the negative cable off the battery for several minutes so the ECM can reset itself. That may help.

Computer may have been having difficulty adjusting to the additonal air flow.

This is a hot topic on this forum right now. It has been said that installing an aftermarket intake will actually decrease your gas mileage while adding an exhaust on the other hand will give you better mileage. Installing an intake and an exhaust will pretty much bring you back to where you started.

i think the K&N just sounds so good .. you tend to put your foot to the floor more so you can hear it, hence worse gas mileage.

I do want to agree with you but on my truck my mpg went up 1.5mpg with just AFE. Borla exhaust gave it a .5mpg increase. This was done several times @ 60mph. Got the same 22.5mpg. Again I'm on flat florida and I don't have any mole hills to go over, just an occasional ant hill.

air filter

thanks for replys thus far. Will disconnect negative cable and will manually compute milage for next tank. However, still would like to know purpose of the charcoal filter in top of air filter box lid and whether removing it will help with non stock air filter use. Driving habits and terrain unchanged, also live in fla. Would like to get this issue resolved as I plan on driving to california in a few months. tks dan

The AFE C.A.I replaces all that charcoal stuff , and I don't have any experience with the K&N . But my mileage has not changed .

The charcoal filter is used to trap fuel vapors that might escape after the engine is shut-off. I don't think it really matters if you leave it in place or not...I doubt it hinders air flow enough to warrant its removal.
