The pimp is right, you need to modify the KnN to intake away from the heat of the motor. I did on my 2000 Tundra.

Isn't the stock box a cold air intake?

I see a number of aftermarket units have holes that allow engine compartment air to enter as well as the cold fender well air. Personally I don't have an issue with this because if the choice is pulling a little warm air vs restricting air intake - I think the restrictin intake as a bigger HP loss.

After researching this issue for an hour or so - I'm leaning towards just ordering a K&N filter and let it go at that. I would like a little more noise under the hood, but an not sure it is worth the trouble.

Anyway, I'll probably let this thread play out before I make a decision.

the k&n has the shield to keep it away fromt he heat of the motor while placing it right by the fender well to receive cold air.

You believe that works? How is something that is not air tight and form fitting going to keep out warm air from the engine? It still gets the majority of its air from the engine bay. A "cold" air intake is more like an intake with the filter ran to the bumper where nothing but cooler air comes in, or a totally enclosed intake unit.

Once again I have to ask:

Isn't the stock unit a cold air intake?

It's starting to look to me like the only benefit of the K&N setup is that it has a less restrictive air filter - trading engine life for power.... Is it sacrilege to entertain those kind of thoughts about K&N on a truck forum?

Yes, well its a hell of a lot more of a cold air intake than a K&N or some other units. Yea K&N flows better, but it flows more hot air and dirt also.

You may be well aware of this, and he could be just pushing for TRD products, but my Toyota service guy recommended against using oiled air filters, specifically K&N, because a very minute amount of the oil in will cause problems for the air sensors.

Just like the Ford, Dodge, and Chevy models there is an optional "Super Scoop" that comes out of the bottom and points into the wind! Check this bad boy out!!!!Banks Power - Product Release - Banks Ram-Air Intake System for Cummins, Duramax and Power Stroke.

Dez the only thing I don't like about it is the factor the scoop goes down underneath the radiator or bumper and that's too low for me. I'm just leery of flooding situation and that scoop picks up water.

How does the AFE pull cold air in? Is there a hole in the fender or does it go underneath by the tire. I know nothing about CAI's obvisouly. Does it hurt to use the CAI when it is really cold outside, like below zero?

OK first of all cold air contains more moisture than warm air and there is a higher oxygen content in cold air. When you hear people say it doesn't matter if warm air is sucked into the intake they either don't know better or they are misinformed. It makes a big difference! The super scoop can be modified to sit just below the radiator or below the bumper. Mickey there is a water scupper at the back of the scoop for water reasons. The Banks intake system is a true CAI, and I can't wait to match it up to my new Banks Monster Exhaust! Dez's leson for the day!
