MOAB May 26 - June 3

@KevinK and I are going to Moab! We've never been. We are both very experienced at back country travel. I live in SoCal, Kevin lives in Phoenix. This will be a pure overland trip, 8 nights under the stars, hit the road May 26, travel home June 3. There will be minimal planning involved, lots of beer consumption, delicious food, and awesome trail running.

Anybody want to join us? You will need a fully capable rig, fully self-contained, full set of recovery gear, and be experienced with back country travel and dispersed camping. We would like to have 4 to 6 trucks.

Bonus points if you are familiar with Moab and Southern Utah.

-Alex

I just purchased a project vehicle. I am building it specifically for Moab. Planning on having it put together by April of 2018 for the kids spring break.
Moab is awesome, we have been a few times.

88 3/4 ton suburban. Bought it from my dad. He has had it since new. Very nice shape.
Brand new 5.7 under hood with 500 miles. Th400.
I just ordered the skyjacker 8" all spring no block. After I am done installing the lift, and get the drive lines figured out, 4.56 or 4.88 front and rear with arb front and rear.
38" tires. Plan is to put a rack and RTT up top. I've given myself a year to get it done so as soon as the lift gets here I will start tear down.

There is lots of camping in Moab. If you are boondocking just look for flat, high ground. I assume you a going to hit one of the longer trails and stay away from the obstacles?

Nice! that thing have solid front axle? You should just do 5.20 and 40s lol on a full size like that might as well. I've been thinking about doing a full size rock rig, keeping it super cheap and doing a 1 ton short frame. but fml I have no where to park it.

We haven't started trail research yet. I dont want to do the kindergarten trails unless the scenery is spectacular. But we also can't do the black diamond ones either. Basically we can go anywhere a tacoma or 4runner on 33's can go. As long as the trail isn't super narrow. I've done Gold Mountain in Big Bear several times, that is probably the most difficult-rated trail I've ever done. But it didn't seem that difficult to me.

Any trail suggestions?

Heres a some pics of me on Gold Mountain:

I also recently chopped my rear end:

Go check out this site. Don't hesitate to call the chamber of commerce either.
Good helpful people.
Chicken corners is over 50 miles long and rated easy.
All you need is 37's or bigger and lockers front and rear, and your able to do poison spider
Yes the suburban is solid front axle.
I actually thought about a 12" lift and 40's, but I couldn't find a manufacturer that had all spring no block for the rear. Plus I looked at a few and 40's is just too big.
37 or 38 inch tires are already going to be about 2k, I think that's more than enough.
