Anyone have any tailgate assist aftermarket products that they can recommend or not.

EZ Down - pickup truck tailgate damper This is what I would recommend I had one of these on my Silverado and loved everything about it!

Yes, the EZ Down is what I am looking for but they don't make for the 05 Tundra. Anyone purchased one and installed or modified so that I know it would work.
There is a tortion bar one out there but it requires drilling into the tailgate and bed. It also makes it more difficult to remove the tailgate, which I do quite often as I have a hydraulic dump box that I insert several times a year for hauling material to the yard.

OK, this is my next mission. T-sak12m, are you saying the 07-08 Tundras have a tailgate assist on them? If so is it a separate part that perhaps I could purchase and modify to fit my 05? Part number?

The 07 and 08 Tundras have them factory installed in their tailgate i don't believe that it is a separate part from the tailgate! I am not 100% on this but I will check with my buddy who works at Toyota and get back to you but maybe in the mean time someone with an 08 can chime in and let us know a little something about theirs!

I'm pretty sure you can buy it as just a part. Its located behind the driver's side tail light. Looks like a black tube with 3-4 spines running down it. I'm not sure which forum it was, but I know someone had theirs replaced bc it froze up.

You can see pictures of unit if u look for the install that Toxarch did for a differential breather tube (not sure it thats what it was named) maybe he'll chime in with the title or just pm him

Trust me the assist is not worth the trouble, after following my bro to the desert house two weeks ago I realized that when driving the truck with the tailgate down (with bikes load up) the tail gate bounces up and down like its floating due to the assist mechanism. This is also why there have been some cases of tailgates falling off on the highway. I'm looking into a way to defeat this useless function.

If you don't want it, just remove the driver's side tail light and remove the gas shock behind it.

Can you take photos of the install and if you remove the part I would be interested in purchasing from you.
I was at the Dealer today and they have no clue as to how this function works or what makes it work. I thought it was a wound spring in the hinge but from the above posts it is a hidden strut.
I never run with my tailgate down, I just remove it from time to time.
