Hey everyone just grabbed my 04 Tundra...98k on her. Last owner was crazy with maintenance. So after still going threw it, its clean and good before i start to dump money into it anywhere else. Im more than likely going to grab some headers and gibson exhaust. Do the tints, LED headlight bulbs from a company i work for (olympus off road), change the rest of the lights to LED, double din, SQ stereo setup(speaking of which, front doors are 6.5" correct?), and its already got what i think is a 3"/level. Not sure...so i went out and got some measurements and description about what I seen. The front measures 39" from ground to top of fender, rear is 39" as well, floor below the door is 22" on the pinch 23" from bottom of door. Front shocks are bilistein yellow shocks and looks like a thicker spring to me...but not sure. Rear looks like just stock shocks, they're black with 4 leafs in the leaf spring. My question with that is what it is equal to vs a stock tundra. Next is, I'm wanting to run 20x12 wheels with a -44 offset with a back spacing of 4.77" and wanted to run 33x12.50's on those...Am i asking for to much here? Some of you might know the look I'm going after, some might think I'm dumb. To each their own. If this can be done, I'm guessing some trimming might need to be done. That being said, i don't want to hack this mint gen1 up...will a slightly smaller width rim with a spacer work? If not, whats the widest I can run? I like the super poke look. Before you ask, the truck won't be wheel'd hard...ha. Its going to be a tow/daily for a EXACT same tundra/tacoma setup as a pre runner and look VERY similar but both having two WAY different builds clearly.
So you're probably not going to get a lot of feedback. I posted up a similar question a few weeks back and the answers were few and far between. Lots of hits though...
That is definitely one of the most aggressive setups that I've heard or read about. All I can do is tell you about my experience and try to relate it as best as I can. Here's what I did:
I went for an 18x10 -24 with a 285/65R18. It is one of the more aggressive setups that I've seen on the 1st Gen Tundra's. For my lift, I did Bilstein 5100's on the top notch (for 2.5"), with a 1.5" AAL (Toytec) in the rear. I have to say once the lift was installed it was higher than I expected. You're going with a larger wheel/tire combination, but it sounds like you may have more lift. I can't tell you about your specific application but I can tell you that I STILL rubbed. It was extremely minor and was resolved with about 15 minutes of cutting (you can't even tell it was touched if you look), but there was still rubbing. I am 99% sure that if you went with your proposed setup, you will see A LOT of rubbing, even if you have 3" of lift. You're adding a lot more wheel AND tire so I'm almost positive you will rub.
If you go with a smaller wheel width and add a spacer it's essentially the same thing as going with a wider wheel. I can say that a 10" wheel width works and is absolutely perfect, in my opinion. However, I would certainly recommend some type of fender flare or you WILL poke if you go 10" or wider. Personally, I think 12" is too wide but I had guys tell me the same of 10" so I won't tell you not to go for it if that's what you want!
I've seen several guys run an 18x9 -12 with 285/65R18 with no problems at all. I took it a babystep further and added the extra inch on the width. Personally, that's as far as I would go, but I wouldn't have anything but... I absolutely LOVE the look and stance. If you're dead set on 20's, maybe you should go with a 20x10 and a smaller tire that would put you at <33" overall. However, I can't recommend the setup I went with enough. In my opinion, 20's on a tire smaller than 35" is too much. It's not the right proportion. But, like you said, to each their own!
If you have any other thoughts or questions, let me know. I'm definitely not an expert, but I just went through this so hopefully I'll be able to help!
Thanks for the response man. Yes you know the setup I'm looking at kinda than. Thanks. I'll see if I can't find any nice 18s that fit my style. I like really deep lips. So hoping I can find that.
This is the best I have right now. I'll take another today in the daylight and post it tonight. I have the fender flares on my truck and, in my opinion, the 10 inch wheel is PERFECT. Without fender flares 10" might be too much and even with them, I think 12" would be too much.
I'm really liking your setup however I think I'll do a 9" wide as opposed to your 10" wide wheel. The 9" will give me that flushed look with the fender flares that I'm after.
That's a second gen tundra. Much different situation than the first gens. Also, you have 20x12's on 35s not 20x12 on 33's which the OP stated. I think it's a bit too much wheel for 33's but for 35's it's perfect. Unfortunately, it would take A LOT more than just a level for us first gen guys to run that setup. IMO, 18x10 on a 33 is perfectly proportioned.
