use a micro-fiber cloth along with a mild compound assuming goo-gone or the bug and tar remover doesnt work. Also with clay-bars you should do some research into which ones are the mildest abrasives. There are comparisons on the web as to which are the smoothest and which are the harshest. I have always used the gold class....

i use bug & tar remover as stated above
i have recently been using Meguiars quick wax, and that seems to take off anything .. apply with a microfiber towel, let it sit for a minute, then use the other side of the towel and wipe it all off also, a good ol' fashioned car wash down at pablo's hand wash should do the trick

Try a bug sponge (not very expensive). These sponges look worse then they are. Soak the sponge in your bucket of soapy water until it is soft then rub the bugs off, use it gently and go over the bugs a few times. Make sure you keep it well foamed up. The soap will act as a lubricant for the sponge. Bug sponges are awesome you can use them for removing just about anything stuck the paint. I gave one to a neighbor kid to remove the glue from vinyl lettering with a mild solvent (came out beautiful). They can even be used to shampoo the interior carpet and seats. hope this helps

I've actually seen people use that blue painting tape and apply it to the whole front end of their vehicle except for their headlights. When they are done driving on the freeway then all they have to do is peel off the tape. |

They are actually quite small, but they travel in huge swarms. My wife and I drove down to New Orleans the week after Katrina hit and I had to stop 6 times to clean the windshield and radiator due to the love bug swarms between N. Texas and S. Louisiana. They can completely blacken your windshield and clog your radiator within a couple of miles when they are at their worst. Luckily, those types of swarms are "usually" few and far between. That was just a bad day...
It's even worse if you're on a motorcycle...DAMHIK. For example...here's what can happen when you hit a big swarm in a just a few seconds: ![]() And their guts are very acidic. It can etch your paint very quickly. Last edited by TexBiker : 05-11-2008 at 05:52 PM. |

It has been a pain in the ass to remove them, I washed the truck twice already and still.... I guess I am going to buy one of those bug removers to use it over the weekend. I am about to move to Gainesville (transfering to UF on the Fall) and I will be driving at least once a month to Miami, I am getting a bug shield this week.

I'm using Rain-X Bug & Tar remover. Its a bit greasy. Just spray on, let set for about 5 minutes, then wash with a sponge and soap. Reapply if nessesary. It works well on the real chrome, the paint, and on the plastic-chrome grill areas as well. HTH.
Oh, and don't forget to add a couple layers of polish (optional) and wax afterwards to make it easier to get them off in the future. Also, don't let those bugs sit on there for 6 months, particularly love bugs. The bugs will bake on. The love bugs will dissolve your finish. |
