One thing most people don't know about removing a tailgate, (seen this on Mythbusters) When you remove the tailgate, you change the air flow from flowing over the truck and tailgate which it was enginered to do, to flowing over the truck and acctually pushing down on the bed of the truck which increases drag. Very little drag is created by hitting a closed tailgate. Just sit in the bed of a truck while someone is driving and see how much wind hits you, very little I suspect. You create even more drag when you open the back window. Mythbusters did a whole segment on this.
