Actually, both companies were (and still are) hemorrhaging cash. Sirius was bleeding faster, though. They spent way too much money trying to catch up with XM and dug a hole from which they couldn't climb before the profits from Stern and the NFL contract showed up. Equipment subsidies, while necessary to build an initial subcriber base, doomed them both from the start.
It was really coin flip as to which company would buy the other. I'm just glad it looks like satellite radio will survive. I have XM in four vehicles and Sirius in three others. If I had to go back to FM/AM again, I'd just throw the head units in the trash and put iPod docks in their place.
