They are actually quite small, but they travel in huge swarms. My wife and I drove down to New Orleans the week after Katrina hit and I had to stop 6 times to clean the windshield and radiator due to the love bug swarms between N. Texas and S. Louisiana. They can completely blacken your windshield and clog your radiator within a couple of miles when they are at their worst. Luckily, those types of swarms are "usually" few and far between. That was just a bad day...

It's even worse if you're on a motorcycle...DAMHIK.

And their guts are very acidic. It can etch your paint very quickly.
