I just picked up an '08 crewmax and noticed the clunking you're talking about when accelerating from a stop and right before coming to a stop when driving straight. It doesn't seem to make the clunk when the wheel is slightly turned. I first thought it was the brake caliper sliding a little. I went back to the dealership after a few days and had a tech sit and listened as I drove. After the drive, the tech told me that it's the draveshaft slipping slightly to reduce stress and that it was normal on all the new tundras.
I do a lot of city, stop and go driving and it's driving me crazy. I think I'm going back to test drive some other tundras on the lot to see if they also have the clunking problem. Anyone else out there with this clunking sound?
