Toyota and General Motors, which redesigned their trucks for 2007, beat the Dodge Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. Those trucks have had only some minor tweaks since their last redesign.

Officials at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, which builds the Tundra, were proud of the honor. The truck tested by Consumer Reports, however, was built in Toyota's other Tundra facility in Princeton, Ind.

"We are pleased the Tundra received this recognition from Consumer Reports," Vice President Luis de la Garza said in a statement. "It's a nice reflection of our team members' and suppliers' dedication to quality and hard work."

The review touted the Tundra's power and acceleration as well as some of the cabin appointments. The truck was criticized for its ride and the distance from the driver to some of the controls.

"The Tundra's powertrain was just beautiful," said Gabriel Shenhar, program leader for Consumer Reports. "The acceleration was extremely fast. The six-speed automatic was wonderful. Response was smooth. There were some nice details such as interior storage for files and a telescoping steering wheel and damped tailgate."

He said the Silverado model Consumer Reports tested had a smoother ride than the SR5 version of the Tundra, and its rear seat was better than the Tundra's.

The four models each were given a battery of 50 similar tests, which included acceleration, braking, access and cargo. Each model had a similar trim package, and each model was a crew cab, meaning it had a rear seat, though not a full-size rear seat.

Each truck also had the largest V-8 engine available.
