I'd be willing to try building my own of anything, except something I put my families (and other road users) life at risk in. I am more adept with a soldering iron than a mig welder.
Making my own is not an option, I don't even change my own brake pads

Honestly - its a piece of 2"-3" pipe with 2 metal plates welded on top and bottom, 4 bolts through the top. Materials cost about $0.50 - if you bought it - I had all the stuff at home. Labor was a little different - expect a few hours for install (took me about 5 hours when building the lift blocks and installing)
