I was about to mention the same exact thing. I've always used a 5/8" piece of plywood that I back with a roll of non-skid neoprene liner like you use in tool boxes and on RV trailer shelves.

Use spray contact cement to glue it on. This keeps the plywood from moving around.

This simple fix will distribute the load and you won't have a problem loading/unloading anything. I've done it with every truck I've owned and never suffered so much as a scratch on the tailgate.
