Personally, if I were you, I'd take back that controller and buy a Prodigy. It's seriously one of the best aftermarket brake controllers on the market. Set it and forget it. Toyota even offers it as an accessory in their catalog. And the little wiring harness they give you with the truck has a direct color-to-color match on the Prodigy. I hooked mine up in 15 minutes.
I located mine to the right of the steering column and positioned it so I could see the readout through the steering wheel as I'm driving. I can also easily reach the control to apply emergency breaking power via the lever at the bottom of the unit if it ever became necessay. (See pictures)
This location doesn't hit my knee and I'm 6'1" with long legs. Even with the seat all the way up, which I'd never be driving in that position anyway, it still doesn't hit my knee.
