I noticed others have mentioned it but i emailed toyota seeing if they are going to fix the dark gauges during the day, just waiting on a reply. I dont want to run around with my parking lights or headlights on all day just since my 2nd gen tundra didn't have this problem. Anyone else ask them the same question?
No i'm not talking about when the lights are on. When everything is off just your drl's are on there is no gauge back lighting. When you have window tint like i do and you go under a overpass, trees, tall buildings, sun directly on top of the truck you cant read the numbers at all on the gauges. motor trend magazine even said when they first tested the tundra last year "good luck reading during the day". The color of the numbers is a silver that blends in with the black face.
so your problem is your tint? maybe you are a bit color blind, i have a few friends that have trouble seeing the diff in certain colors. just taking wild guesses, cause i have never had a problem.
I also agree that the gauges are difficult to see in some lighting conditions...
I have them adjusted to the brightest setting...
If the sun is shining in at some angles, they are impossible to see...
The backup camera is just a waste of space if the sun is shining on it or near it...
At night, I adjust the brightness down, but the backup camera is so bright then that it blinds me when I back into my garage...
No backup lights to amount to anything at all makes it worse. I honestly hang a piece of cloth over the backup screen when I am backing into the garage at night. I wish it could be shut off at times. I use the mirrors as I only have about a foot of clearance on each side of the truck and I really don't want to make a mistake...
There seems to be no "middle of the road" brightness adjustment...
I really like my 2014 DC SR5, but there are a few things that are very annoying and the lighting situations is one of those things...
Wow, in just a few weeks my truck will be a year old......time flies by.
I am never had any problem reading the gauges, them seem great to me in all lighting conditions.
I do have a big problem when sunlight hits the LCD screen in the middle, nor can I read that with my sun glasses on. My wife has trouble with the LCD too.....Toyota should make it OLED, put a hood over and around it, so the sunlight does not hit it.
Ya, the sun on the LCD is a real pain in the butt. I agree, it would be great to have some kind of hood. My wife's 2012 Honda Pilot has the screen recessed and sun is almost never a problem.
Maybe someone will come up with a nice looking aftermarket screen hood
I have a SR5, with 20/20 vision, and during some daytime lighting conditions its very hard to read. No tint either. I tried to adjust it using the knob by the gauges but it didn't do anything for them. I even went back to the dealer and sat in another SR5 and that one had the same issue. Perhaps it's a trim specific issue. BS when you consider what we paid for these things.

the navi screen is silly to have to go to daylight mode during the day when it starts raining slightly and you have to have wipers/headlights on.
maybe a picture of this washed out or unreadable gauge would be good because I havent had a problem reading the instrument cluster, only the navi screen. in fact i turn the brightness down of the instrument cluster all the way even at night, dont need blinding light at any time.
Never had this issue. Works just fine. I always adjust brightness and during the day seems to work fine too. Nav isn't super great but I can kinda see it. That's a problem they could fix. I would definitely talk to toyota cuz that isn't normal... at all.
I found this for 4runners, i'm sure it applies somehow if someone had a wiring diagram for the 2014. The dash drives me crazy as well. Every morning, and when you're driving into the sun, its so difficult to see.
I think its just a preference for a brighter display. I have a Lexus GX with the back-lit gauges and a brightly lit speedometer needle and I'd prefer something that was closer to that. I like the look of the gauges better when the lights are turned on, even in daylight.
