Mine did it twice. There are little plastic orange and purple clips on the metal rods that hold them into the latch mechanisms. I think the vibration of the bed causes them to pop off. What I did was pull off that cover on the inside of the tailgate, put the clips back in place and install a heavy tie wrap around them to help keep them in place. I have had no problems since doing this.
