I had the same problem. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it in a few minutes. The problem was a washer had come loose from the release latch causing it not to work.
I would fix it myself next time...
Take off the plate on the tailgate and you should be able to immediatly see the problem. I think it is just a star washer. I will drill and pin it next time.
