Yes some corn was used to make ethanol, but there was much more corn produced than the previous year specifically for ethanol. In other words - there was 2 more bushels of corn produced for every bushel that went to make ethanol. Yes prices went up a little, but would you rather see the farmers in Iowa making a decent living finally or line the pockets of some Saudia Arabian prince?
It does get less mileage than gas, but costs much less than gas. If it gets half the mileage of gas, but costs a third as much - isn't that better?
Not entirely sure about the subsidy thing, but I would think that it is..... is oil? Cheese? Chrysler? wind turbines? efficient windows? the fact is that the US government has its hands in just about everything - either through direct subsidies, taxes, tarrifs, import restrictions, etc... they "help out" a lot of industries.

They are bringing an ethanol plant on line just down the highway from me. Columbians own it. I wont buy any.
