on my 2000 TRD I can hit the HI button while in a straight line under 55 or 60 mph it goes right in. for 4 low I have to stop, put it in neutral and hit the switch, also goes right in. good luck hope this helps, I had to play around with it to figure it out, hate to read instructions, I feel that it is just 'another mans opinion'! lol
