Thankfully people at this site helped me and I found a broken clip at the end of the pull rod. I had two wonderful Toyotas in the early 90's before I moved on to German cars and I was VERY DISAPPOINTED to see four such tiny piece of plastic, that will break everytime it gets cold or pop off everytime I hit a Massachusetts pothole, holding the bars to the latches. Good thing the truck wasn't full of stuff and I could take the panel off. If Toyota doesn't have a real fix Im going to rebuild myself with a new bar with a completely closed and bolted ends like should have been done in the first place.
I wish the Germans made pickup trucks. I have a Mercedes Benz G500 made in Austria and the thing is indestructable!
Anyway, I will consult this site when I have problems (or come up with a nice fix)

Have you seen the cheap plastic that all manufacturer's putting on their vehicles? What model truck you have? Any pics?
