I am in a situation where the nearest Toyota dealer sucks. Therefore, I plan on doing routine maintenance myself or letting a local garage handle it. If I have a major issue, I am driving the truck 100 miles to the next Toyota dealer.

Whoa , there .
5-30 will not void your warranty so I don't know why that would be a major concern ? Not everyone has a bad experience with thier dealer , and it's really cheaper for most to have them do it and recycle your old oil. If the dealer does the oil changes for one , it's logged under your Vin# , and two if they screw it up , they have to fix it .
This is a sticky for the DIY oil change the way it's suppose to be done , and if people want to try it thats the purpose of the thread .
I have always changed my own oil , but the dealer does mine for 22.00 dollars and that's cheaper than I can do it myself and I have to drive about 35 miles to get there .
If you do your own that's great ! But no reason to get rattled because some of take them to the dealer and suggest others to do the same .
