Speakers actually do need a break in period - anytime you buy a set of new speakers, the sound changes over time to a softer, less sharp noise. This is due to the material that holds the speaker cone becoming softer.

When I bought my Bose system, the sound was exceptionally sharp, unbearable - so much so that I actually took it back - the guy explained that after a few months the sound softens out - which it did.
