yes i did everything correctly as far as i know. its just that it smoked way TOO much. i modified the smoker before i started. the two main mods are recessing the exhaust down to the level of the grates (helps the smoke float around more before getting sucked out and maintains a more even temp) also i added a little shelf like thing that seperates the firebox from the cook box, which points the smoke downward under the meat. i should have only added wood in the beginning and no more, but i kept adding wood for 2 hours.
