I'm not an expert at this OBDII stuff, but I think it's a slave/host communication protocol, which means without some sort of a hub system, you'll likely only be able to connect one device at a time - regardless of how you make the electrical connection.
That being said, the ScanGaugeII cable is designed to pop off without harming the vehicle, gauge, or data stored. The 90° plug ensures that it's completely out of sight. When the mechanic wants to put his on, he'd simply remove the plug and put his own on.
BTW, the thing reads out the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) which you can research w/google, and clear to turn off the check engine light. Might just not need the mechanic.
